SoftBank finishes $40B OpenAI deal with $22.5B top-up

SoftBank Group has wrapped up its massive OpenAI investment plan. The company said it completed an extra $22.5 billion investment in OpenAI on December 26, 2025, marking the second and final closing of its earlier $40 billion commitment.
The new investment follows a first closing in April 2025, when SoftBank put in $7.5 billion. Both investments were made through SoftBank Vision Fund 2. With this second tranche done, SoftBank has now fully met the pledge it made in March.
The round also included strong demand from outside investors. Third-party co-investors ended up putting in $11 billion, pushing the total funding to $41 billion. SoftBank said the co-investor interest was higher than expected. After the deal, SoftBank now owns roughly 11% of OpenAI.
Masayoshi Son, SoftBank’s founder and CEO, said the group continues to share OpenAI’s long-term goal of building AI that benefits people broadly. He added that the alignment between the two companies remains strong.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said SoftBank backed AI early and has stayed committed as the technology moves faster. He noted that SoftBank’s scale helps OpenAI speed up its work and expand global reach.
